Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement

INTENT

At Dogmersfield Primary School we understand the importance of providing a curriculum that is flexible and engaging and equips the children with new skills and knowledge they need to support progress through their learning journey in and beyond the Early Years Foundation Stage.  We wish to spark their curiosity and interests by encouraging them to think of ideas to explore and questions to answer at an appropriate cognitive level.  Our curriculum is designed to ensure children develop the Characteristics of Effective Learning, while exploring all of the learning areas:

Communication and Language

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Physical Development

Literacy

Mathematics

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design

IMPLEMENTATION

We recognise children’s prior knowledge and build on this by challenging the children’s thought processes. We encourage them to develop what they have learnt, and value their input when reviewing their learning. This allows the children to demonstrate what knowledge has been acquired and how connections have been made to secure deeper learning in their long-term memory.

Through building partnerships with pre-school settings, parents and carers we can identify children’s prior learning and experiences. We will take each child’s unique starting point and encourage them to make progress at their own rate, taking into consideration the different needs of the whole child. Our learning tools encourage a variety of skills which equip children across all areas of the curriculum and will support them in becoming successful learners.

Within our indoor and outdoor learning environment our children will have access to a broad and balanced curriculum which supports the development of children across all seven areas of learning. Along with our learning tools which equip children to be successful and independent learners, the adults will work alongside the children skilfully to observe, support, question and extend relationships, play and learning.

To ensure consistency and progression in the children’s understanding of number, White Rose Maths is used.  This provides many ideas for incorporating mathematical teaching into children’s play, and also gives opportunities for assessing children’s understanding to determine next steps.

Little Wandle is used to introduce phonics to the children, which is then embedded through reading books matched to the sounds they have learned.  This programme has been chosen for its consistency in approach and the systematic introduction of the different sounds.

IMPACT

We believe that children should leave EYFS in Dogmersfield Primary School as confident, happy learners.  They will have an eagerness to find out more about the world around them, and approach problems creatively.   They will have an age-appropriate understanding of number, and feel secure in the knowledge of graphemes they have covered.  They will be keen to take on new challenges as they move into Year 1.
